Match Report: Catalan 6 Wigan 26

Catalan Dragons v Wigan Warriors - First Utility Super League 21 - Round 20
Saturday 2nd July 2016. Kick Off 6:00pm (5:00pm UK) at Stade Gilbert Brutus

Match Report

Last year's 56-18 loss away at Catalan was probably the lowest of the low in terms of a poor season of away results. This year's trip completed a sixth consecutive away victory and was perhaps one of our best away results in the ten years of trips to the south of France.

The win actually reminded me of the 2008 play off victory at Stade Gilbert Brutus. It was twenty minutes of not exactly being under the pump from Catalan but being comfortable soaking up early pressure in the opening quarter, with just a penalty goal conceded to Pat Richards, before bursting out with three tries in ten minutes to quickly find total command of the contest.

Ironically it was a poor sin bin for tripping to Lee Mossop in the 19th Minute that sparked Wigan into finding another gear and just 83 seconds later Catalan had knocked on and Dan Sarginson had touched down in the right corner.

Further tries from the excellent Ryan Sutton and then a brilliant finish by Oliver Gildart had Wigan 18-2 up by the half hour and Matty Smith added a penalty a couple of minutes before half time for 20-2.

Most pleasing for me was the response by Wigan to conceding a try to Catalan early second half. Described by Shaun Wane afterwards as a "soft one", that made it 20-6, I was fearing Wigan would end up in a game because so often this season they had made it far too easy for teams to hit back at them with ill discipline and poor errors.

My memory may have been clouded by beer but it seemed very comfortable second half that we were not going to let this one slip at all. Only one further try in attack came, a nice finish from Dom Manfredi from a nice grubber by Sarginson, but in the end I don't think this was a came you came away question why Wigan didn't "kick on". That was something questioned in the Cas cup tie but this one was still a battle and Wigan's full control and game management was pleasing to watch.

So a good job done and a good weekend enjoyed by all the Wigan fans that went I expect. It's amazing how a turnaround in away form can change the mood but we are now joint top of the table and dots are beginning to look far more connected. I feel a spanking isn't too far away and Wakefield might be ripe after the 0-62 score of April. We shall see.
